Which pistol should I buy?

I looked at several pistols and the ones that I liked that I felt comfortable holding were the walther 990 and the Taurus 24/7 both .40 caliber. I'm going into a career in law enforcement so I need to get comfortable using a pistol so which of those is better in quality or for my job (reliable when I need it to be)?
