.223 or .308 caliber?

Hi I am an avid dear/elk hunter and I also LOVE to target shoot as well. My question is which is better? .223 or .308? I have heard the .223 is better for target shooting/small game like groundhogs. But I also have heard that the .308 is BEAST at both target shooting, and big game? So which one should I look into.....?
