What rifle caliber is best for hunting bison?

Other than the Sharp's calibers what modern caliber rifle cartridge is best for hunting buffalo? Is a 30-06 good or do I need something bigger. If so; what is the best caliber including price and versatility. I don't want to be stuck w/ a gun I can't use on anything else. What do you think I should get?
