Why is Ja Rule going to prison for 2 years?

Police pulled him over, and "found a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic gun in his Maybach sports car following a concert in the city with Lil Wayne, who was detained separately." Is carrying a gun a crime? I'm not educated on gun law, so can someone explain it to me?
